Glowing devotion

Titled “Hot to have” the German “stereoplay” magazine has been warming up towards the mono-blocks Cayin 880 Selection. Author John Maier was downright enthusiastic: “With more than sufficient power performance, the monoblocks really enjoyed leading tube criticism to absurdity. So much for soft sound: A double bass seemed to have just the right amount of volume, wood, body, and string tension” For their fiery appearance stereoplay awarded the amplifiers with their “highlight” recommendation.

With the 880 Selection Cayin created powerful tube mono amplifiers delivering a whopping 44 watts at triode mode, respectively 75 watts switched into ultralinear. These features and their crisp, rich sound make the monos definitely suitable for audiophiles with power-hungry speakers. The winning performance marks a strong opening of the new Selection Series awarded with the editors “highlight”. In this particular series Cayin uses extremely high quality and strictly selected components. This includes tubes from Electro Harmonix, special capacitors from the United States and extra current stable power supply capacitors. Another typical design feature is Cayin’s elaborated point-to-point wiring. The mono audio power amplifier allows switching between the triode and ultralinear mode, and features user-friendly bias adjustment with the help of a precision instrument display and precise potentiometers. A strong toroidal power transformer is the backbone of electricity supply. Therefore, the tube team, consisting of four 6550EH, a 12AX7EH, plus a AU7EH and a 6CG7, can draw on almost unlimited sources. Amplifier specialist Johannes Maier also found that the designer of Cayin revealed consequence even at the inputs: “the 880’s not only pretend a balanced input by just creating a simple hot to ground connection. With an extra buffer IC the brand new monoblocks receive the double signals rather balanced and without unwanted ground coupling.” This sustainability distinguishes the balanced sound of the 880’s: ” The attraction of the Cayin monoblocks – as it turned out with various speakers – is not in the fast seduction of the tube sound. Rather, they will make their owners happy by letting him enjoy every kind of music always with sunlight, always well-proportioned but never getting obtrusive.”
